Explication Essay

In: Exploratory essays

An explication essay presupposes a thesis, idea or process that must be explained clearly, logically and thoroughly. This is a common task that can be assigned to university students. Writing an explication essay can be very easy if you know what to write about and difficult if you are not quite competent about the subject of your essay. Anyway, there is a method that will allow you to quickly master explication essay writing and be able to write explication essays quickly and easily.

  • First of all, make sure that you know the subject of your essay. Look through additional material you can find concerning the topic of your explication essay and try to use the information you find there while writing it.
  • Avoid using your own reasoning and expressing your ideas in the explication essay. Its principal aim is not expressing your opinion upon the process or idea in question, but the description and, as it is clear from the title, explication of this process or idea. So try being impersonal when writing an explication essay.
  • Remember that you are writing for an educative purpose, so you need to make your writing brief, logic and understandable. Do not use messy long sentences with multiple clauses and avoid using complicated special terminology simply to make your essay sound ‘bookish’. Do not be afraid to make your explication too simple – the simpler words you use the better.
  • Avoid using slang and colloquial expressions. Though your explication essay should not sound too complicated, it is still a piece of scientific writing, not a post on the internet. So, stick to the scientific or scientific-popular functional style.
  • Plan and structure your explication essay in order to clearly understand the order of your description while writing it. There is no specific structure that you should use by all means. You should just arrange your writing so that it is easy to read and logically structured.
  • Start your writing with the introductory paragraph where you will formulate the thesis – the statement that you are going to dwell upon, develop and illustrate. The thesis is usually placed in the last sentence of the introductory paragraph.
  • Continue your explication essay with the further clarification of the subject and provide more information about it. Use topic sentences that will briefly introduce what you are reading about at the beginning of each paragraph.
  • Sum up the explanation in the concluding paragraph. It should briefly mention all the points of your explication essay and give a short review of the essay’s main points.
